Orcas, Humpbacks, and the Salish Sea

Whale watching from Vancouver operates in the Strait of Georgia and the Gulf Islands — waters that support resident and transient orca (killer whale) populations, humpback whales (increasingly common since their recovery from near-extinction), grey whales (seasonal migrants), minke whales, Dall’s porpoises, harbour seals, Steller sea lions, and bald eagles. The tours depart from Granville Island or the downtown waterfront and run approximately 3–5 hours, with the boats navigating the strait and the island channels where the whales feed.

Orca (killer whales) are the headline species — the Southern Resident orca population (endangered, approximately 75 individuals) and the transient (Bigg’s) orca (more numerous, feeding on marine mammals rather than salmon) are both present in these waters. The Bigg’s orca are more frequently encountered on tours.

Humpback whales have returned to the Salish Sea in significant numbers since the mid-2010s and are increasingly the most reliably sighted large whale on tours — breaching, tail-slapping, and bubble-net feeding.

The tours operate on zodiac-style rigid inflatable boats (faster, closer to the water, more exhilarating) or covered cruiser-style vessels (more comfortable, sheltered from the elements).

Frequently Asked Questions

What whales will I see?

Orca (transient/Bigg’s are most commonly encountered), humpback whales (increasingly common), and occasionally grey or minke whales. Sighting rates for at least one whale species are approximately 90% during peak season (April–October).

When is the best time for whale watching?

April through October, with peak sightings May–September. Humpbacks are present throughout. Orca sightings are less predictable but occur regularly.

Is the zodiac or the covered boat better?

The zodiac is faster, sits lower on the water (closer to the whales), and is more exhilarating. The covered boat is more comfortable (shelter, seating, washroom) and better for young children or visitors who want a less physical experience.
